Tournament Timer
Preset: 30+0 — a relaxed rapid game
Tap a clock face to pass the move. First to run out of time loses.
Thirty minutes per player is a relaxed rapid time control. It gives you enough time to think properly about plans, check your calculations and play the endgame with care, while a complete game still fits into about an hour. It is a popular choice for club evenings, school chess clubs and friendly games at home.
This 30 minute chess timer opens pre-set to 30+0. Press Begin Game, place the device beside the board and tap your own side after each move. If your club plays with increment, add it before you start: 25+10 and 30+30 are also common rapid settings.
A simple plan is to use about five minutes for the opening, fifteen for the middlegame and keep ten for the endgame. Without increment, try to avoid falling below two minutes while there are still many pieces on the board. If you often run short, add a 5 or 10 second increment to practise with a cushion.
Is 30 minutes rapid or classical?
Rapid. FIDE counts anything over 10 and under 60 minutes per player as rapid.
How long is a 30 minute chess game?
Up to an hour of clock time in total, usually 45 to 60 minutes.
Is 30 minutes good for improving?
Yes. Longer games let you apply what you study and make it easier to learn from your mistakes afterwards.
Can I add increment?
Yes. Enter any number of seconds in the increment field, for example 10 for a 30+10 game.
Every format has its own pre-set clock: Bullet 1+0, Blitz 3+2, Blitz 5+0, 10 Minute Rapid, Rapid 15+10, 30 Minute Rapid and the Tournament Clock 90+30. Or set any time control you like on the main online chess clock.
